A lovely small ryokan, Momiji-so is located away from the main crowds in Momiji Park on the way to the ropeway. It is a bit of a walk, especially with luggage, but they do have a car service if you call the inn from the ferry station.
Only one other group was staying at the same time as us, so the innkeepers knew who we were when we entered and immediately showed us to our room. It was the deluxe room “Hinoki”, located on the first floor. It is situated next to a carp pond, and has a sitting area with western table and chairs next to sliding glass doors that open to the outside. Welcome tea and cakes were served in our room on a low table and seats in the center of the room. These are moved while you are at dinner and your futons are laid out.
Dinner and breakfast are included, and are served in a dining room, not your own room. Dinner is a multi-course affair; ours included sashimi, large grilled shrimp, Hiroshima beef, several vegetable dishes, and seasonal fruit. Breakfast is a choice of Japanese or western; though we asked for Japanese the night before, we received a western one, with thick toast, eggs, yogurt, miso soup, fruit, and a delicious mango/apple/orange juice. Still delicious, even though not what we ordered.
A side note: the inn only accepts cash as payment, so make sure you have enough to cover your bill. Also, the two people we dealt with spoke virtually no English; I believe there is a daughter that does, but we did not see her. We managed with our small bit of Japanese, but some things took a while to figure out, such as them wanting to give us a ride early to drop off our luggage at the station then bringing us back so we could explore the park.
