The ryokan was a bit difficult to find. It is not far from the Hakone Yumoto train station, so we took the bus. I guess it is at the second bus stop, but we did not get off there and went way too far, then had to catch a bus going back. The lettering on the ryokan is in Kanji and there are many buildings next to each other, so it was hard to tell which building was the right one. Finally we saw someone and asked for help; luckily they worked at the ryokan and we were standing right in front of it!
Very little English is spoken, but we managed to learn the basics about dining and our room. We had reserved the “Take” room with a private outdoor rocky hot springs bath. Entering the room is a small hall, leading into the main room. By the glass sliding door there are western table and chairs. The bathroom had a little bit of a funky smell, and the sink and mirror were almost comically low to the ground. The bathroom also had a oval tiled sunken tub for soaking. The outdoor bath was a treat.
Dinner and breakfast is included in the price. They are served in a main dining room upstairs. They were both okay, but they did give Kelley stomach pains (a rarity).
For the price, especially with a private outdoor bath, this ryokan was an excellent deal. The room was a bit worn, and there was some noise from the river outside the room which might bother some people.
Would We Stay Here Again? We liked it, but next time we might try another ryokan
