A lovely small ryokan, Momiji-so is located away from the main crowds in Momiji Park on the way to the ropeway.  It is a bit of a walk, especially with luggage, but they do have a car service if you call the inn from the ferry station.

This is a budget ryokan located near Kyoto Station.  The outside of the ryokan is nothing special and the street has no character but we found the inside to be quite charming.  The owners do not really speak English, but we managed quite well.  Breakfast is included in the rate and was excellent, with egg, tofu, miso soup, pickles, etc.  The room was small but comfortable, with a private bath.  This was the only traditional inn we stayed at for our first trip to Japan, but we enjoyed it so much we will definitely be staying at more on our future trips.

Kyoto Royal Hotel

We stayed here our first night in Japan. While the rack rate for a superior room is 30,000 yen, we were able to obtain one for 15,000 yen. The lobby was very nice, but our room was extremely small and the bed a bit hard.  The room had no special character at all.  I suppose not bad in Japan for about 150 USD, but I would definitely not pay the rack rate.  The location is very good, close to a subway station and a short walk to the Gion district.  Very busy with shops and restaurants

Ichinoyu Ryokan

Location: Hakone, Japan

Price We Paid: ~$215

The ryokan was a bit difficult to find.  It is not far from the Hakone Yumoto train station, so we took the bus.  I guess it is at the second bus stop, but we did not get off there and went way too far, then had to catch a bus going back.  The lettering on the ryokan is in Kanji and there are many buildings next to each other, so it was hard to tell which building was the right one.  Finally we saw someone and asked for help; luckily they worked at the ryokan and we were standing right in front of it!

Granvia Hiroshima

Hotels in Hiroshima were hard to come by for the Saturday we were there, so our options were limited.  We chose the Granvia mostly for access to the train station.  We stayed in a standard double room; small, but not too bad, with typical mid-range hotel decor.  As usual the lobby is much nicer than the rooms.  The bathroom was a pre-fab.  The bed was too firm for me, but the pillows were great -memory foam and feather/down- and made up for the bed.
